FeCC is part of a nationwide network of APEX Accelerators, a DoD funded program through a cooperative agreements.

8 Steps to Federal Contracting

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the primary framework used to categorize industries and establish size standards for businesses. Depending on their scope and capabilities, companies may be assigned multiple NAICS codes to accurately reflect their operations.

Find Your NAICS Code

To successfully enter the federal market, two key codes are essential: the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and Procurement Service or Product Codes (PSC). NAICS codes classify businesses based on their primary economic activity and are used to determine small business size standards for government contracting. PSC codes, on the other hand, classify the specific products and services the government purchases. For market research, PSC codes are more effective because they pinpoint the exact products or services being bought, enabling a much more precise analysis of market demand.

The government may be buying products or services similar to yours. Verify it with two free tools: the Federal Procurement Data System (FPDS) and the System for Award Management (SAM).

Analyze Federal Purchases

It's likely the government purchases products or services similar to what you sell, but how can you be sure? Two free tools, the Federal Procurement Data System(FPDS) and the System for AwardManagement (SAM), can provide answers about what, who, how, when, and where the federal government has made purchases. FPDS is essential for understanding federal agency purchasing patterns, as it tracks all government procurement activities. SAM complements FPDS by offering standard and custom reports with comprehensive data.

The government publishes daily bids to encourage competition and identify vendors.

Review agency procurement projections to understand their purchasing plans. Each federal agency publishes an Annual Procurement Projection as required by the Small Business Act.

Explore Agency Forecasts

Federal agencies publish annual procurement forecasts. These forecasts offer a detailed overview of anticipated procurement activities for the coming year, helping businesses understand upcoming demand for various products and services. Reviewing these forecasts provides valuable insights into agency purchasing plans, allowing businesses to identify aligned opportunities and proactively tailor their strategies to meet government needs, thus positioning them to submit competitive bids and proposals.
